My Top 10 of 2019
From most trips you come home with souvenirs. The best trips are the ones from which you come home with memories and stories that last you a lifetime. Whether I’m going on a trip around the world or just around the corner, I’m constantly exploring, constantly keeping my eyes open and my index finger primed so I can come back home with a picture that tells a story.
I don’t usually do a top 10, or indeed a top anything, when it comes to my photography, but I thought I’d give it a go this time. For a number of reasons. As 2019 marched on, I began to sense a change in me, the photographer. It might have been gradual, or it might have been precipitated by particular events, it might have been an outcome of workshops I attended, or videos and podcasts I watched and listened to, but it was tangible. I found that I had begun to care less about what other people thought of my photographs and more about what I wanted to convey through my images, what I thought and felt at the time I saw the scene in front of me. I found myself less willing to let the viewer dictate what I should take a picture of (and how), but more interested in telling him why I found the scene compelling. I have written more about this here and here. There is also a story behind each of these images that I’ve talked about in other posts in this blog, so I won’t repeat myself.
So, without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my ten favourite photographs from 2019. I hope they’ll speak to you as they did to me.
